The International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) will be co-organising a 1-day Waste Technical Workshop together with the Waste Management and Recycling Association of Singapore (WMRAS) on 28 June 2010 at Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre, Singapore. Themed, "Recycling & Resource Recovery Technologies", this 1-day workshop serves to provide insights and greater understanding of recycling and resource recovery options for municipal waste. Participants would be able to review today's achievement as well as explore tomorrow's possibilities for this growing arena. The workshop is targeted at both private sector and government participants from Singapore and the Asian region.

The objective of this programme is to upgrade the skills and competencies of the waste management industry. The association hopes to provide an environment conducive for training to uplift all level skills set of employees in industry. Through the training, the employees will be well equipped with standardised industrial skills sets and competencies to utilize technologies.

WMRAS successfully organized its annual Chinese New Year “LO-HEI” Dinner on 26 February 2010 at Ah Yat Seafood restaurant to usher in the Year of the Tiger. We had the privilege to invite Mr Andrew Tan, CEO of the National Environment Agency (NEA) as the Guest-of-Honor for the event. The dinner was well received and supported by members of WMRAS as the tables in the restaurant were all fully taken up. There were approximately 240 guests and members who attended and enjoyed the event as they “Lo-Hei” for prosperity, success and good fortune in the coming year.

1 to 4 December 2009

WMRAS participated in the EnviroAsia 2009 exhibition on 1 to 4 December 2009 at Suntec Singapore. Several of the members company such as Sembcorp Environment, Ecowise, STSE Engineering and the likes participated in the 4 days exhibition.

Themed “Towards Environmental Sustainability”, this exhibition provides a great opportunity for industry players to exchange notes and gather latest information and technology towards a sustainable environment.

21 August 2009

WMRAS successfully conducted the Annual General Meeting at Swissotel Merchant Court Hotel on 21 August 2009 from 4pm to 6pm, followed by a networking dinner after the AGM. As this coincides with the election year, the Executive Committee Members for the work year 2009/2011 were also appointed by the members. More information on the newly elected EXCO members could be found in the executive committee link. More than 60 people attended the AGM and enjoyed themselves at the networking dinner.

WMRAS successfully organized an industry to industry networking session on 23 June 2009 January 2009 for all members and invited guests at Suntec Singapore during the Singapore International Water Week 2009. About 60 people attended and enjoyed themselves at the networking event.

The Singapore International Water Week 2009 will be held from 23 to 25 June 2009 at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Center. WMRAS will be setting up a booth to participate and support the event as an exhibitor.

At the same time, WMRAS will be hosting a tea session on 23 Jun 2009, 1.30pm to 3.00pm at Suntec Exhibition hall 401 for members and industry players to interact and network to explore business opportunities.

WMRAS participated in the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) seminar organized by the National Environment Agency (NEA) on 22 April 2009 at the Regent Singapore. A booth was allocated for WMRAS to showcase the association’s contribution and development efforts toward 3R. The guest of honor for the event was Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources.

WMRAS held its annual Chinese New Year “Lo-Hei” Dinner on 6 February 2009 to usher in the Year of the Ox. Mr. Andrew Tan, newly appointed CEO of NEA graced the occasion together with about 170 members and guests at the dinner.

WMRAS successfully organized a networking session on 16 January 2009 at Pinchos (8 Rochester Park) for all members and invited guests. About 50 people attended and enjoyed themselves at the networking event.

3 - 6 November 2008

The ISWA/WMRAS World Congress 2008 was successfully organized from 3 – 6 November 2008 by WMRAS and International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).

The congress provided an important forum for leading experts to exchange technical knowledge and discuss new ideas to address increasingly complex challenges in waste management and resource recovery in the next decade.

This event included a combination of an extensive technical program with parallel sessions about pertinent issues facing the industry, an expansive exhibition, great networking events and left a deep impression and experience to those who attended the congress.

Overall, the ISWA / WMRAS World Congress 2008 was a resounding success.

Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre

WRMAS, together with Singapore Water Association (SWA) and Singapore Association for Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety Companies (SAFEco) are the Association's Partners in the new Enviro Asia 2007 event.

Enviro Asia 2007 is the integrated show of Enviromex, Watermex and Enviro Asia, to be held in Singapore in November 2007. This will be the biggest environmental exposition to showcase exhibitors' most advanced environmental technologies, explore business collaborations and raise public awareness of environmental products and services.

Held in conjunction with Enviro Asia 2007, WMRAS together with the National Environment Agency (NEA) is organising a forum themed "Sustainable Waste Management and Technology Forum 2007". This forum to be held on 27 November 2007 aims to provide a platform to share ideas and experiences of sustainable waste management among international experts and industry players.

WMRAS organised a mission trip to Amsterdam in 21-28 September 2007. The objectives of the mission trip are to help members to establish and enhance bilateral economic relationship and explore area of business co-operation between Singapore and other companies around the world.

Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre

WMRAS, together with SPRING Singapore and the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) organised EPIF 2006 in Singapore. The fair was held in Singapore for the first time.

Chaired by Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of the Environment & Water Resouces and Advisor to WMRAS and supported by many leading government agencies, trade associations and members, the fair attracted a participation of 107 international exhibitors as well as more than 34,000 visitors in three days.

The debut show helps to raising the public's awareness of environmentally-friendly products and services and their benefits. It provided a business platform for members as well as enterprises to meet to explore business collaborations and enhance the potential of green markets in Singapore and the region. Besides opportunities for sharing and networking, the fair also offered insights into the state-of-the art environmental technologies and solutions.

WMRAS organised a mission trip to Copenhagen, Demark to seal the ISWA (International Solid Waste Association) Annual Congress which will be held in Singapore in November 2008. This trip was led by Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Mayor of South West District and Advisor to WMRAS. The trip was joined by representatives from the government agencies and members of WMRAS. The objectives of the mission trip are to create business and networking opportunities for participants with the waste management and recycling companies in Copenhagen, Denmark; and exchange with key government officials and municipal officials; to explore potential business partners / agents; as well as to increase the participants’ awareness of business opportunities such as joint ventures and investments, latest product knowledge and trends.

Singapore Expo

Following its debut success in 2003, WMRAS has its 2nd presentation - EnviroAsia 2005. This event was organised by Waste Management & Recycling Association of Singapore (WMRAS) & Singapore Water Association (SWA) and co-organised by National Environment Agency (NEA) and Public Utilities Board (PUB).

To assist companies maximise their participation benefits at Enviro Asia 2005, WMRAS put in place the inaugural PSA (Pre-Scheduled Appointments) program to match-make exhibiting companies with their visiting buyers, thus effectively managing exhibiting time. In addition, the PSA program was held in conjunction with the hosted buyer’s program, which works as a complimentary scheme to assist companies bring in their desired buyers from around the region.

A Green Living section was also set up in the exhibition where visitors have a glimpse of the viability of eco-friendly living concept from the Eco-House constructed by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC).

In conjunction with the exhibition, the International Environment Summit 2005 (IES 2005) had brought together experts and participants around the world to address the issues pertaining to the waste and water related issues and also the available technologies and solutions. It was also envisaged to be an interactive ground for industry leaders to share their valuable experiences in working towards environmental sustainability.

WMRAS participated in the annual campaign Clean & Green Week 2005 to raise environmental awareness. Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong was the Guest-of-Honour for the launch of the campaign and about 23 MPs with 2,000 invited guests attended the launch ceremony. There were more than 100 booths, a flea mart, performances, sporting activities, water sports, arts and nature appreciation including tree planting activities.

WMRAS was invited by SPRING Singapore to has a lunch meeting with Minister to discuss on industry development plans and issues.

WMRAS participated in the National Recycling Day 05. This time, NEA commemorated their second Recycling Day at three different locations - Dunman Secondary School, Yew Tee (Grass patch & hard court beside MRT) and Bukit Ho Swee CC. The bulk of the events were held at Dunman Secondary School and the programmes included the game booth competition from the schools, various communities and school performances, the exchange of recyclables for tokens by the PWC and an attempt to set a record for the longest chain of plastic bottles.

WMRAS has been invited as one of their partners for the event and Ms Loh Wai Khiew, Chairman of WMRAS was also being invited to speak at the seminar on “Recycled materials – Closing the Loop”.

The event comprises a half-day seminar and a full day exhibition. The aims of the event were to promote the use of recycled materials in building construction and to encourage environmental sustainable building designs. Recycled materials/products and innovative environmental technologies will be showcased, some of which are being test-bedded in Biopolis. Members attended the event took a tour of Biopolis to view the various eco-friendly features.

Singapore’s first ever Recycling Day was organised by NEA, WMRAS, SEC and People’s Association (PA) in partnership with the Public Waste Collectors. The event aimed to remind residents and 3P (People, Private and Public) partners the importance of waste recycling as a means to reduce the amount of waste disposed at incineration plants and landfills. The event was launched by Dr Yaccob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources.

WMRAS organised its first charity bowling tournament to raise funds for charity. Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister for the Environment, was the Guest-of-Honour for the charity event. Lending their support to the tournament were Dr Amy Khor, Member of Parliament, Hong Kah GRC, Hong Kah North Constituency; BG (NS) Lam Joon Khoi, CEO of National Environment Agency, members of the Association and partners of the environmental industry.

Through this first care event of WMRAS, the association raised more than $15,000 which were donated to the Bukit Batok Home for the Aged - a home for the elderly destitute which provides medical, health care and rehabilitative services to its 200 residents.
